The love of attracting birds and other wildlife to our yard has been a constant with Cindy and I over the years of our marriage. At each place we’ve lived, we’ve tried a variety of feeders to try and feed the desired birds while foiling the squirrels at the same time.
We’ve attracted a large variety of birds and other wildlife over the years. While it does require a small investment in time and money, the rewards of seeing wildlife up close have been worth it. However, we’ve learned the hard way that cheaper feeders usually will not last very long, at least with the aggressive squirrels that we have here in South Carolina. Nothing is more frustrating than to go out and see that the squirrels have chewed through another feeder ruining it. Not only does this require buying a new feeder, but the birds miss out on their regular food until we can replace it.
Another benefit I’ve found to attracting birds and other wildlife is the chance to photograph them at close range and without trips into the field. With some pre-thinking, it is easy to place feeders where there will be attractive backgrounds for photography behind them.
I’ve found several great websites on-line that have supplies for the avid birdfeeder and offer high-quality products. A favorite of mine is the Backyard Bird Company which offers a variety of feeders and also other cool accessories on-line.
